COLLEGE RUGBY
GAMES IN MASTERTON SPARKING EXHIBITIONS. WINS FOR LOCAL TEAMS. In a sparkling exhibition of the Rugby code Wairarapa College first fifteen beat Napier High School first fifteen at Masterton by 12 points to 6 yesterday afternoon. Played in warm sunshine on the new college grounds, which were in splendid order, the match produced football of a standard rarely seen in senior matches. The game was particularly fast and open and provided many thrills for the spectators. The teams were led out by the Wairarapa College Pipe Band and paraded around the field, creating a very favourable impression. In the first few minutes of play Wairarapa College carried play deep into Napier’s territory. College pressed hard and were almost over, but a series of infringements eased the pressure on Napier, who were defending particularly well. The first points for College came when from 35 yards out Welch secured the leather and potted a beautiful field goal, making the score College 4, Napier 0. Exploiting their advantage in weight, the Napier forwards played a determined game. Neill then kicked a penalty for Napier from a handy position. Play ranged up and down field for a time at a fast pace, and just before half time Carter went over for Napier, the try resulting from the ball being thrown out to the winger after a nice back movement. The kick at goal failed, leaving the half time score Napier 6, College 4. On resuming Wairarapa College made a valiant effort and Taylor went over for a try under the posts, which he converted, placing College in the lead by 9 points to 6. Several players received minor" injuries, and a member of the Napier team a bad knock. Play developed into a hard, clean struggle for supremacy, the College team going like champions. G. Jaspers went over from a melee in front of Napier’s posts to add a further 3 points to Wairarapa’s total. Napier made a great last minute effort to pull the game out of the fire but the College defence was very sound. Time sounded soon after, the score remaining, Wairarapa College 12, Napier 6. This is the third time in succession that College has beaten Napier. The latter’s back line did not appear to function as smoothly as that of the Wairarapa College, and the forwards relied more upon force than tactics. Taylor at first five-eighths, Welch at full back and Wilson in the forwards were outstanding in the College team. Mr E. Grantham was an efficientreferee. Mr J. E. Tier coached the College team. The teams were: Wairarapa College— E. Welch, G. Slatter, I. Dale, I. Sutherland. T. Taylor. M. Schofield, D. Stevens, G. Jaspers, G. Stubbs, E. Stevens, N. Wilson. M. Quinn, N. Humphries. J. Eton, A. In an earlier match the Wairarapa College second fifteen beat Hutt Valley second fifteen by 14 points to 6, it being a bright, open game. For Wairarapa College tries were scored by Slatter (2), Matthews, and Beaufort. Schofield ccnverted one of Slatter’s tries. Rendle crossed Wairarapa College's goal line for an unconverted try and Horrobin kicked a penalty for Hutt Valley. Hutt Valley took the offensive from the start and dominated play in the first spell, but Wairarapa College came into its own in the second half and launched some very effective forward attacks. The teams were fairly evenly matched, the balance of weight being in Hutt: Valley’s favour by a wide margin. Wairarapa College fought like bulldogs and by sheer persistency won the day. In the Wairarapa College team Matthews. Boyne and V. Mangham were the pick of an even pack, and in the back line Q. Schofield and A. Dewar were the shining lights. Rendle and Horrobin stood out in the visiting team. Mr H. P. Glen coached the Wairarapa College team. The teams were: Wairarapa College. —-R. Cardno, E. R. Slatter, J. Golder, G. Cormick, R. Major.
