PRODUCTION COUNCIL
WAIRARAPA’S PART IN WAR EFFORT. ASSISTANCE TO FARMERS. Reporting to the Wairarapa Production Council at its meeting today, Mr R. H. Brewerton, representing the seed merchants, stated that there was quite enough machinery in the Wairarapa to carry out the extra production plans. He considered that from Pahiatua downwards 1,000 acres of barley would be grown in the Wairarapa this season. Mr G. W. Hutchinson (Featherston) reported on the excellent progress being made in his area. In reply to a question asked by Mr R. Kebbell. Mr Brewerton stated that contractors would plough ordinary ploughable country for £2 15s to £3 per acre. Messrs Kebbell and P. R. Welch urged that the agricultural committee investigate the question with a view to forming a uniform basis of costs, depreciation, etc. Mr N. Lamont, of the Agricultural Department, outlined the financial plans made by his Department and the State Advances Corporation to make loans to enable increased production to be carried out. He stated that the District Primary Council and the Production Council would each nominate three men. two members for the financial committee to be appointed fiom the nominations by the National Primary Council. The appointees would sit on a financial committee with a member of the State Advances Corporation to consider applications for loans. Mr Ben Roberts, M.P.. also briefly outlined the details of this scheme. Messrs Hugh Morrison. R. E. Gordon Lee. W. Wilson (chairman of the Dairy Federation). A. McDonald, R. Kebbell and J. Andrew, were nominated for the two men tp be appointed to the finance committee. Earlier proceedings are reported on Page 7.
