CENTRAL SCHOOL

MEETING OF COMMITTEE. ' LOYALTY TO THRONE & EMPIRE The monthly meeting of the Masterton Central School Committee was ■ held last night, there being present Messrs J. E. MeV. Caldwell (presiding), C. J. Braggins, A. V. Dixon, A. W. Dixon, W. L. Butler. P. H. Shaw, W.\>sR. Nicol, and J. H. Cole. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs Newman and Gibbs. The headmaster. Mr E. G. Coddington, submitted a very satisfactory report, showing attendance as follows: Roll number. Central 515. average attendance. 477; percentage 92.6; East roll, 66; average 60; percentage 89. Inspectors had visited the school and had expressed high satisfaction with the work of the staff. The congratulations of the committee were extended to the staff for the excellent report of the inspectors. The Pahiatua District High School Committee requested the support of some resolutions to the effect that a certain time should be devoted to promoting amongst the scholars loyalty to the Throne and Empire, and that a ■ Navy League representative should give lectures on this subject. It was considered that all that was necessary was being done already by • the school staff and the committee ■ saw no reason for a resolution. The Dominion Federation of School Committees’ Association suggested the 1 inauguration of a branch of the federation in Masterton. After considera- ‘ tion of the matter the committee de- ‘ cided that it could not undertake to meet the proposal. The Women’s Emergency Corps requested the use of the Assembly Hall for its meetings twice a week and after careful consideration it was de- ■ cided that although the committee fully supported the efforts of the corps for war purposes it was unable to grant the use of the hall, owing to considerable disorganisation it would cause due to the school being under repair and remodelling. The secretary was directed to write to the effect that the committee very much regretted that it was unable to accede to the z request. The secretary was requested to ask r the Education Board to concrete the borders of the proposed flower plots at the north side of the school in conjunction with the remodelling of the ( school and to provide seats there for children. The headmaster was authorised to procure trees for the celebration of Arbor Day. The secretary was directed to write to the Parents’ Association requesting its consideration of assisting in the cost of installing a sink and wash basin in the Central School for the use of the teaching staff, which was not included in the remodelling scheme. Messrs Newman. Nicol and Gibbs were appointed visiting members for the ensuing month. Mr Coddington said several junior circles had been formed in the school and a Red Cross Council consisting of representatives from each circle had been set up. There were doing useful work. Many parcels had been collected and £l2 had been raised and paid to the Sick. Wounded and Distressed Appeal. Further funds were on hand for future work. It was also proposed that these circles would help with a stall for the senior Red Cross Paddy’s Market in August.
