ITALIAN “VICTORY”
MUSSOLINI THANKS > HIS NAVY SUCCESS IN RUNNING AWAY. ' HELD HIGHLY MERITORIOUS. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day. 12.30 p.m.) ROME, July 11Signor Mussolini has issued an order ■ of the day praising the Italian Navy ■ for the results obtained in the naval ' battle between the British and Italians in the Mediterranean. It runs: “Admiralty, naval officers and sailors of ' Fascist Italy, you have obtained your . first naval victory in an encounter against British naval forces in the ’ Mediterranean off Point Stila. The attempted British manoeuvre failed, due to your bravery. You have taught the enemy by direct hits of your cannon that one cannot challengingly ap- ' proach the Italian coast. Together, the * surface ships, submarines and Navy reconnaissance planes strenuously fought. The Italian nation is proud of the results of this first battle. I praise you with equal pride.” British Admiralty reports have made it clear that the Italian warships retired hastily 'tinder cover of a smoke screen and that there were no casualties and no damage on the pursuing British ships.
