“DAYTIME WIFE.” Linda Darnell, who made her first screen appearance in “Hotel For Women,” is now co-starred with Tyrone Power in “Daytime Wife,” which will be shown tomorrow night at the State Theatre, another gay comedy romance in which the two appear as a young married couple. Comes their second wedding anniversary and Tyrone is “detained at the office” again. Wifie Linda begins to wonder .whether Tyrone’s beginning to wander —in the direction of his secretary, Wendy Barrie. She also gives some thought to inc intriguing question of “what’s a secretary got that a wife hasn’t?” Not a girl to sit and wonder, Linda gets busy, with the aid of her thrice-wed friend. Binnie Barnes, and starts finding out She figures that if the proper study of man is man —the proper study of sec? etaries must be secretaries. So she ,-e--cretly gets herself a job as secretary lc suave Warren William (whose office, incidentally, boasts as a receptionist comedienne Joan Davis). The hilarity mounts in leaps and bounds, climaxed by an unforgettable scene where Tyrone,, Wendy. William and Linda meet in a night club. Linda learns about secretaries, Tyrone learns his lesson and all ends happily—but not until Linda has made Tyrone suffer plenty! The handsome “King of the Movies” is at his charming best in this gay romantic mood and little Linda Darnel! is a splendid actress. The film gives Linda Darnell the opportunity to create a real sensation and previewers agree that she does so. It is certainly one of the most brilliant pictures of recent years and has established box office records in various parts of New Zealand. Among the short subjects are up-to-date news reels which include an interview with “Cobber” Kain; and a Fox Movietone specialty, “Secrets of Australasian Defence.”
