TURF NEWS AND NOTES

CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE AND COURSE Racing in fifed at Trentham WELLINGTON STEEPLECHASE TO CHAT' EL MEYNELL WINS HURDLES (BY "THE GRAFTER.") Chat scored a surprise win in the Wellington Steepleche. the principal event of the Wellington Racing Club s three-day win ci meeting, which opened at Trentham yesterday. The Trentham Hurdles was won impressively by El Meynell, wno has now won three hurdle races in as many starts. On the flat the Whyte Handicap was won by Royal Star II and the sprint by Blonde Princess. 2

The weather broke fine.for the racing, but as the reSult of a week's rain the track was very heavy and holding and the times slow. Favourites fared poorly and. while there was no sensational surprise, there were some very satisfactory backers both for a win and a place. The totalisator -turnover was one of the most surprising features of the day. showing an increase of £3921 10s. The figures were £60.632 10s (win, £26.032; place, £34,600 10s) against ■ £57,341. As last July was a record winter meeting for the club, its unbroken run of successes is really amazing. Results: — Mariri Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase, about 2Jm: 3/2 Dozie Boy. 9.7 (A. Surprise in Steeplechase. Padishah, a solid favourite for the Wellington Steeplechase yesterday finished only a poor third, and he was a very distressed horse at the finish. The race was won comfortably by the sixth each way favourite. Chat. Flashlight made the running for six furlongs and was then displaced by Clarion Call and Chat, this pair drawing clear away and jumping fence for fence. Clarion Call was outjumping Chat at most fences, and the latter had a life at the stand double the last time, but at the broadfence, about five furlongs from home. Clarion Call reached for the jump and crashed. This left Chat well clear, and, though Ballybrit made n strong run home, he never had any chance of catching him. Padishah, who had been back in the rear in the early running, had moved up handy as they entered on the last ten furlongs, but he made a bad jump at the brush just behind the mile post, and though he stayed on for the third placing, he was never' a possibility. Small Boy was dangerous for a long way. while Gay Boa also handy for over two miles, began to go back at the last mile and fell at the fence near the six furlongs. Two Certainties Beaten. Rebellion and Valantua appeared to 1 be two certainties beaten at Oamaru.

Nearly Brought Off Surprise. An outsider in Screen Star nearly brought oil a surprise win in the Stewards' Handicap at Trentham yesterday. He drew close in. and making the most of his lightweight, had all the field bar Blonde Princess beaten in the straight, but the latter stuck very solidly, and. vigorously ridden by Wiggins, wore down the leader. Brazilian came with a late run out on the track, to take third well clear of White Rajah, who beat a tiring lot. All the other early leaders. Grey Honour. Skyrena, Vascones and Majority stopped in the run home. Amigo finishing fifth, then came Vascones, Majority. Skyrena and Black Thread. Aero King, Rebel Mate and Paper Note were never seen, and Orate got left. Reserved for Riccarton. Slayer was a surprise defection from' the Wellington Steeplechase. There is nothing amiss with him. his owner deciding that it would not be wise to set him the severe task of carrying a big weight on the heavy ground which is practically certain to be in evidence this week. Slayer was eased up for a while after his hard race at Wingatui, but has progressed well since, and is expected to be in his best order for the Grand National Steeplechase meeting. An Error of Judgment. Valantua was ridden a peculiar race in the big event at Oamaru. He was under a hard pull from the outset to keep him off the heels of the leader, Hanlon, and these tactics were pursued to the straight entrance, where it was thought he could have been taken to the outside; but he still followed Hanlon, and was not pulled out till too late. With different treatment Valantua would have been a much more difficult proposition. After the race, J. Dooley, rider of Valantua, was called before the judicial stewards, who decided that he displayed an error of judgment in adhering too strictly to his riding instructions. and in failing to use his own discretion. The-stewards also decided that the owner-trainer. F. Shaw, erred in his instructions to Dooley. Night Scout’s First Success. Baitruin, favourite for the Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase at Oamaru on Saturday, looked like winning when he moved up to the leader, Night Scout, going to the last fence, but did not carry on, and the latter beat him comfortably. This was Night Scout’s first success of any kind. He is a dashing jumper with a good turn of speed, and may develop info a useful cross-country performer. Country Clubs. The twenty-seventh annual meeting of the New Zealand Country Racing Clubs will be held in Wellington on Friday next. The report of the chairman, Mr H. McManaway, is as follows: —During the year the executive made strong attempts to have the 1 per cent rebate on totalisator receipts retained, if only in relation to country clubs up to £12.000 turnover a day's racing. At one time there seemed a reasonable chance of obtaining this benefit, but the war intervening disposed of this hope. As the period of the war lengthens it is hard to say how it will affect racing in Nev/ Zealand. and particularly country clubs, but members of all racing clubs will, I think, agree that its winning is the only thing that counts at present. It is hoped that delegates from clubs will make a point of attending the meeting. At the 1939 conference it was agreed that the association carry on for 12 months, and. if it did not receive better support from clubs, that it would be wound up.”
