HINTS FOR THE AMATEUR
Fruit, Flowers and Vegetables WORK FOR THE WEEK VEGETABLE GARDEN. Land sown in green crops in autumn should now be dug and the crop turned under to decay. No rubbish should be left on the ground'to form a harbour for slugs and other pests. A sowing can be made of early) peas, broad beans and turnips. Break up and manure ground for future cropping as well as any land from which crops have been removed. Keep a close watch on the early-sown peas and take measures to protect them from birds. Seeds subject to attack by birds may be protected by stretching black cotton along the rows. FLOWER GARDEN. In applying fertilisers at the time of planting, see that they do not come into immediate contact with the roots; mix well with the Jp. soil.. Rooted suckers of chrysanthemums may be detached from the plants and lined out in rows. Roses should nowibe planted, but defer the pruning until the end of the month. Continue to plant ornamental shrubs and hedge plants when the soil is in a workable condition. FRUIT GARDEN. When pruning is completed, clean up the primings and burn them, together with fallen leaves and mummified fruits. Many diseases are carried over on fallen leaves and decayed fruits. If the stone fruits have not had an application of lime lately, now is a good time to apply. Prune the stone fruits first, as they will soon be in bloom.
