GOLF NOTES
MAHUNGA CLUB GAMES SATURDAY'S PLAY. LADIES TROPHY COMPETITION. (By “Cleek. ) Golf is one of the few winter spoits whose devotees refuse to be daunted or intimidated by the elements, no matter how unkind these may be. Nothing short of a cataclysmic upheaval will persuade certain of its ardent disciples from foregoing their regular weekend game. Conditions on Saturday were far from pleasant but there was a full muster of players at Mahunga. amply swathed in wind and weather resisters, ready and anxious to return good cards for the second qualifying round of the Ladies' Trophy competition. Despite the adverse conditions many players put up amazingly good performances. J. G. McFarlane, to prove that his first round was no mere flash in the pan, played to some purpose in scoring a net 68. This enable him to qualify first, with four strokes in hand oyer his nearest rival. “J.G.” seems to improve with age. and now that the season is well under way, with a consequent lessening of the arduous duties attaching to his office as secretary of the club, he will be able to devote more attention to his game than has hitherto been possible. The reduction in handicap which his latest exploit has earned him will no doubt be a spur to further effort. A. McCalmont was rightly pleased with his round of 69 net. He only took up the game a few weeks ago but has shown an aptitude for it remarkable in a beginner. He is developing an attractive style and with a few more games under his belt will be able to return consistent scores. I. McFarlane played below his handicap of 7 with a net 70. He has had some off days lately but is now hitting the ball with freedom and returning scores more in keeping with his undoubted ability. G. R. Turner also played soundly for a net 69. This player is usually within •a stroke or two of his handicap and his latest effort will no doubt be rewarded with a further reduction. R. F. Buick, V. E. Burridge, R. B. McPherson and L. M. Roach all played strictly to their handicaps by equalling the par of the course, 71. The two first-mentioned both play off 20 and if they maintain their present form should soon be rewarded with reduced handicaps. L. M. Roach must be reckoned one of the most consistent performers in the club. Only twice this season has he scored more than a stroke over his handicap. There is a maturity and sense of rightness about all his shots that probably accounts for his consistently good scores.
