Fines totalling £3O were imposed on Lancelot Goodger, a horse breaker, when he appeared in the Te Arona S.M. Court to answer charges ol assault, resisting arrest and acting in a disorderly manner in a public place while drunk. On the first two charges Goodger pleaded not guilty, and on the third guilty. Messrs R. Sprague and W T Dale, J.P’s., were on the Bencn, and Constable M. E. Parker prosecuted. Accused was not represented by counsel. , . . In outlining the charges, Constable Parker said that at about 10 p.m. on Thursday, defendant entered a restaurant, owned by Mr V. Mercep, and proceeded to the kitchen where he helped himself to some food. When he went to the safe for more. Mrs Mercep endeavoured to prevent him, but he pushed her into a corner. No bodily harm was done, but she was sufieiing very much from fright. Mr Mercep asked Goodger to leave the premises, added Constable Parker, but he would not go, so Mr Mercep informed the po“Accused was drunk enough to be obstinate, and when I placed him under arrest he would not come till I had solicited the aid of another person, eventually landed him in the lock-up and he appeared very sorry for h im " self,” said Constable Parker.
