SEPARATE PEACE
MOVEMENT IN SOUTH AFRICA NOT GATHERING MOMENTUM. FORMER DEFENCE MINISTER AS PROPAGANDIST. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, July 8. The Bloemfontein correspondent of “The Times” says that Mr Pirow, who was Defence Minister in General Hertzog’s Government, in a speech declared that it was necessary for South Africa to make a separate peace with Italy and Germany. “Our internal problems cannot be solved unless the country discards the forms of government introduced by Rhodes and Milner and returns to the days before the Boer War,” he added. One of a series of Nationalist meetings to protest against General Smuts’s war policy was held in Bloemfontein. The correspondent says the campaign is failing to gather momentum, despite intensive propaganda.
