REFUSAL TO ABDICATE
—. —s KING HAAKON REPLIES TO DEMAND. NO FREEDOM TILL GERMANS WITHDRAW. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 11.15 a.m.) LONDON, July 8. King Haakon, replying to a telegram from the Presidential Board of Norway, refused to abdicate on the ground that he was best serving the interests of Norwegians by retaining his position. He added: “If conditions are created permitting the Government and myself to return, we shall immediately do so, conditionally on all foreign military forces leaving the country. The arrangement made between Germany and the Presidential Board implies that German occupation would still be maintained. Therefore, I see no possibility of the existence of a free Norwegian Government in’Norway. It is obvious that the State Council would be compelled to follow German direction as long as Norway is occupied.
