In a list of donations of gifts to the Red Cross Society, published on Saturday, the name of Mrs G. R. Croll was inadvertently given as Mrs Crosse.
Mr and Mrs Clair Wyeth, of Dunedin, are visiting relatives in Masterton. Mi Wyeth has enlisted for service overseas and expects to proceed to Burnham shortly.
Archdeacon J. A. Jermyn, vicar of Greymouth, will be acting vicar of the Miramar-Seatoun parish till the vicar, the Rev. C. E. Willis, who has been called up for service as a chaplain to the forces, returns.
Mr E. P. Wills, diocese secretary and registrar of the Diocese of Christchurch, has been appointed provincial secretary in succession ito the Ven. Archdeacon W. J. Simkin, now Bishop of Auckland. Mr Wills was formerly an assistant master at Wanganui Collegiate School.
Captain H. A. Brockett and Mr W. Laing have been appointed waterfront commissioners for Lyttelton. Captain Brockett is a member of the staff of Kinsey and Company, Ltd., and Mr Laing is a waterside worker and has been president of the Lyttelton blanch of the Waterside Workers’ Union.
While carrying out the duties of overseas commissioner for the National Patriotic Fund Board with the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force, Major F. Waite, D. 5.0., M.L.C., will hol'd the rank of lieutenant-colonel. Advice to this effect has been received by the board from the Minister of Defence, Mr Jones.
Mr Barry Marschel, at one time a' well known figure on the stage of New Zealand and Australia, died yesterday in Wellington after a brief illness. During a long stage career he appeared in companies fathered by J. C. Williamson, Jennie Lee, Dion Boucicault (the elder).'Grattan Riggs, Maggie Moore, Alfred Dampier and George Darrell, besides his own companies.
Last night, there was an exceptionally heavy guest list at the Hotel Midland Masterton: Messrs E. G. Scrimshaw, E. V. Reisterer (Hamilton), C. Morgan (Wanganui), Maxwell. Small, H Blackmore, B. Hollier, C. Toxward (Hawke’s Bay). J. Ronald, T. Carroll. G. Whittaker, De Luen, L. Shanahan (Wellington), R. Hymes. W. Cook, N. Morton (Palmerston North). At the annual meeting of the Pahiatua branch of the New Zealand Retained Soldiers’’ Association the following officers were elected:—President, Mr G. Kent; vice-president, Mr S. Macrae; treasurer, Mr C. S. Carrad; auditoi, Mr M F Ryan; executive, Messrs A. P. Jensen, P. A. Bisset, M. Moriarty, A. E. Cook, G. Ancell, M. Lawson, P. R. Boagey, J.-W. Greaves and Di. H. Paterson.
The death occurred in Wanganui of Mr Bernard Armstrong, brother of the Minister of Health. Born in Ireland 70 years ago, Mr Armstrong came to New Zealand at the age of five, and had been engaged in bush-felling and mining, and in public works activities. He retired some years ago and had since made his home at Wanganui. Sisters of Mr Armstrong are Mrs J. Dwyer (Bulls), and Mrs J. Mayne (Napier).
A pleasant function took place in Masterton on Saturday night when the chairman of the Masterton County Council gave a farewell dinner to two employees of the County who are attached to the Third Echelon, Sapper T. N. N. Coley and Private I. Morris. Councillors and representatives of the administrative and outdoor staffs were present. A presentation was made te the men by the chairman. Mr R. E. Gordon Lee. The recipients suitably responded. The College Old Girls' Association held an enjoyable evening last nigh' at the home of Miss Joan Prentice. Renall Street, there being a good attendance of members. Musical items were given by Misses N. Boddington A. Peterson and J. Prentice and a communitv sing was enjoyed by all. Supper, served by the hostesses, brought an enjoyable evening to a close, rhe next evening will be held at College House on Monday, July 29, when members will be the guests of Mrs G. G. Hancox.
There was a representative attendance of mourners at the funeral in Masterion yesterday afternoon of the late Mrs C. Hawke, of Bannister Street. The service at the residence and that at the graveside were conducted by the Ven Archdeacon E. J. Rich. Vicar of St Matthew’s. Among the many beautiful wreaths received was one from the Registrar and stall of the Social Security Department, Masterton. Messrs D. C Hawke (grandson), J. H. Minton (son-in-law). P. H. Andrews. L. Phillips. H. Baillie and M. Jackson (nephews) acted as pall-bearers.
