WOMEN’S DIVISION

MEETING OF MASTERTON BRANCH GIRLS’ CLUB PROPOSED. CALL FOR INCREASED PRODUCTION. At the monthly meeting of the Masterton Branch of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union. Mrs C. C. Jackson presided over a good attendance of members. The secretary, Mrs Rue, acting under medical advice, sent in her resignation which was accepted with regret. It was resolved to send her- a letter of appreciation for past services and best wishes for a speedy recovery. Mrs W. James was voted to act pre tern in Mrs Rue's place. Two representatives. Messrs G Blatchford and K. Donovan, of the Young Farmers’ Club (Masterton) attended the meeting to discuss the formation of a Girls’ Club. This was the outcome of a letter sent from Divisioi Headquarters in which the Dominior Executive of the Young Farmers Clul I had written saying many girls had ap plied to join their clubs, but this wai not thought to be desirable. It wa bought better if the girls formed club >f their own, the Young Farmers slubs promising every assistance and

help. The matter was thoroughly discussed, especially the possibilities of having to take the place of biotheis who might have to go overseas, also with a view to increasing production , on farms, which was now so urgcntly required. The Masterton Young Farm- ’ ers’ Club members were giving a dance i the next evening and it was thought i that speakers from the Women’s Diyis- , ion and Young Farmers’ Club might suggest organisation. ; A letter was received from rhe se- ‘ cretary of the Ladies’ Committee of the , Army, Navy and Air Force Club, i thanking members for the generous , box of cakes sent to the Soldiers’ Club as a contribution to supper for men in services. Mesdames Coe. Burling, Barrel-, Ramsay, Pike and Miss Brown were appointed as helpers to the ' Paddy’s Market for Red Cross Funds ’ on August 2. It was decided to help •’ with surprise packets to the value of j Is, also to send produce, cakes, etc., to P various stalls. , Members who had attended the meeting of farmers the previous Monday spoke on the necessity of more production, especially the part countrywomen could play by keeping fowls io increase egg production. Britain needed eggs and it was thought that it every farm doubled and redoubled the output the export of this commodity would be considerable. The Govern--7 ment had promised a remunerative B price. It was agreed by those in the room to a increase the production and give every e publicity to it so as to get all the iii- ’ cubators in and around Masterton full “ of chicks for the coming season.

CARTERTON BRANCH MONTHLY MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Carterton Branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held in the Presbyterian Hall on Friday. Mrs H. E. Ordish presided over a good attendance of members. Final arrangements were made for the combined division and Young Farmers’ Birthday Party. Letters of acknowledgement and thanks were received from: Mr W Nash, Minister of Finance, for the donation of £l4 to the War Expenses Fund; Mr P. Cole, Town Clerk, for £3 handed in for parcels for the soldiers, Miss Berril, secretary of the Red Cross Society, for knitted garments and comforts. . • . Members were reminded of the Provincial Executive meeting to be held in Masterton on Wednesday. Members were also asked to attend a public meeting to be held in the Dalefield buildings to discuss patriotic matters. „ _ Mrs H. Ordish introduced Mrs Barrel and Mrs Page, visitors from Masterton. who spoke to the members on the scheme introduced in Masterton loi the adoption of orphan children from Great Britain. Members were keenly interested and a very hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mesdames Barrel and Page. Afternoon tea was served b> the hostesses, Mesdames Wilson F. Cou.t. J. Court, E. McGarvie, H. Hoddei, P. Hodder and Standen.
