FRENCH PLANES
EMPLOYED IN ATTACK ON BRITISH SHIPS REPORT BY THE PETAIN GOVERNMENT. RETALIATION FOR ATTACK AT ORAN. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 11.55 a.m.) VICHY, July 7. A communique states: “Two naval air squadrons which were being demobilised were re-armed and attacked at their moorings at Gibraltar British warships which took part in the cowardly attack at Oran. At least one large vessel was hit.” M. Prouvost, in a broadcast reply to Mr Churchill's House of Commons speech, reproached the British government with presenting a brutal ultimatum instead of entering into a contract with the Petain Government. He added: “It cost us too dearly yesterday to be soldiers of Britain for us to consent today to be sailors under the Union Jack.”
