CELEBRITY CONCERT
A CENTENNIAL ATTRACTION. OPERA HOUSE ON SATURDAY. Thanks to the representations made by the Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, Maserton, is to be privileged to enjoy Centennial Celebrity Concert at the Opera House on Saturday evening. The occasion will be a notable one in many respects, as the performers include some of the world’s best known artists. The vocalists, who have been acclaimed wherever they have appeared in New Zealand, are Miss Isobel Baillie (soprano), Miss Gladys Ripley (contralto), Mr Heddle Nash (tenor) and Mr Oscar Natzke (bass). Mr Clifford Huntsman, an English pianist, is the accompanist and solo pianist. In addition, the performers include the Centennial String Quartet, comprising Messrs Vincent Aspey (first violin), Harry Ellwood (second violin), William McLean (viola), and Frank Bate (’cello). , , Miss Isobel Baillie; whose singing has aroused world-wide appreciation, from small beginnings has made headway by dint of hard work and sheer ability. In 1923 the opportunity came for her appearance in London and so instantaneous was her success that the Queen’s Hall claimed her no less than six times in the first season. Since then, Miss Baillie has appeared at the Queen’s Hall on innumerable occasions. She has achieved great success in “Faust” and the “Messiah” and at great English musical festivals, such as the Three Choirs Festival, Leeds Festival, The box plan opens at the Arts and Crafts on Wednesday.
