Messrs L. Cooper, H. Bailey, F. J. McKenna, H. H. Stewart and J. H. MacRae (Hastings) are guests today at the Hotel Midland, Masterton.
Squadron Leader T. W. White, who has been commanding officer at Weraroa since its inception last year, has been transferred to Rongotai. The death occurred at Woodville yesterday of a well-known resident in the person of Mr James Pinyon Goodwin, at the age of 78 years. Mr and Mrs Richter, or High Street, Masterton, yesterday suffered a bereavement in the death of their youngest daughter, Mauren Gladys, aged 4 years.
Recent guests at the Prince of Wales Hotel, Masterton, were: —Messrs N. S. Galyer (Christchurch), E. G. Milton, W. S. Curry (Palmerston North), M. Buchanan, J. Larwood (Wellington), M. Godden, R. Mitchell, W. Richardson. Squadron Leader L. E. Jarman, D.F.C., has been promoted to the rank of Wing Commander, according to advice received by cablegram by his father, Mr H. E. Jarman, manager of the Christchurch Tramway Board.
In a cablegram to his father, Mr C. C. Ross, of Masterton, Mr Charles Edward (Jim) Ross states that he has been granted a commission in the R.N.V.R. Mr Ross has been in England for the past seven years.
A pleasant function took place at the Masterton Police Station, when representatives of the Wairarapa Police Force gathered to farewell Constable W. S Bacon, of Tinui, who has been transferred to Wellington. In making the presentation of a fountain pen, Senior-Sergeant G. A. Doggett wished Constable Bacon every success in his new sphere, and congratulated him on his work while in the district. Constable C. R. Reardon also spoke and referred to Constable Bacon's popularity. There was an attendance of fifty guests at Mr and Mrs W. McGovern’s residence, High Street, Masterton, on Saturday night, when a social was held in honour of Sapper T. N. N. Coley. Dancing and cards were enjoyed, Mr P. Hancock providing the music. Extras were played by Mrs Catherall and Mr McGovern. A tasty supper was provided. In making Sapper Coley the presentation of a case of brushes, Mr McGovern wished him Godspeed and a safe return on behalf of the guests. The recipient suitably replied. Advice has been received that Engineer A. R. Mowat, son of Mr and Mrs A. N. Mowat, Clydevale, South Otago, who was serving on the Arandora Star when she was torpedoed last week, is not among the survivors and must be considered one of the victims of the U-boat’s attack. Mr Mowat was born in Dunedin and educated at Christian Brothers’ High School. After gaining engineering experience in Dunedin he joined the Union Steam Ship Company. He was an engineer in the Rangitiki for 18 months before transferring to the Blue Star Line. In a recent letter he indicated that he was sailing in the Arandora Star on a special voyage. To railwaymen throughout New Zealand, the death of Mr E. J. Dash in Christchurch, after a short illness came as a shock. Mr Dash retired from the service only two years ago. MiDash joined the Railways Department at Timaru in 1903 and was a member of the Timaru branch of the A.S.R.S.. becoming chairman in 1908. In 1910 he was elected Timaru representative to the A.S.R.S.. and, with the exception of a short period, he was subsequently continuously associated with the national office, of which he was later president, holding this position for the record term of six years and nine months. Mr Dash was also a member of the Railways Appeal Board for 24 years and the Railways Superannuation Board for 16 years.
