PROVING THE SIRE
OFTEN A PERPLEXING PROBLEM.
One of the most important, and often perplexing, problems facing the breeder of dairy stock, both pedigree and grade, is to find the quickest, yet quite reliable method of proving the breeding value of the bulls used in the herd. The showring or a critical examination for type will indicate at an early age the general conformation oi his daughters, but the first lactation must be well advanced before the productive capacity may be gauged. Even then the judgment may be premature, and not accurately assess the value at a mature age, particularly if the first yields are low. But when the heifer’s yields are above the average of the breed or that of the particular herd where the returns are measured, the continued use of the sire is clearly justified.
