NATIONAL WELFARE
MEETING OF WOMEN’S LEAGUE. APPEAL FOR CLOTHING. The monthly meeting of the Women’s National Welfare League was held in the Midland Hotel yesterday afternoon. There were present: Miss Kummer (ir. the chair), Mesdames Kilgour, Gooding, McKenzie, Watson, Reynolds. Hunter, Harrison, Glen, Drummond and Misses Boddington and Beiliss. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames Free, Fletcher, Munn, Caselberg, Andrew, Jordan and Misses Guild and C. Cameron. Reports were submitted by Miss Beiliss on visits paid during June to the Masterton Hospital. Mesdames Hunter, A. W. McKenzie and Drummond are to be among the visitors for this month. The Buchanan Home was visited on June 20, when an excellent musical programme was provided and the old people enjoyed the singing of patriotic and old time songs. It is hoped that it will be possible to arrange another visit in July. Mrs Pither will attend a conference' in connection with Blind Institute work in Auckland next week. Mrs McKenzie reported on welfare work during the month, when assistance had been given to several families. There is an urgent need for all kinds of clothing, especially for children from 7 to 14 years. Parcels may be left at Shoosmith’s shop. The resignation of the secretary, Mrs Glen, was received with regret. Miss Kummer, in thanking her for her services, presented her with a bouquet. Mrs Kilgour consented to act as temporary secretary. The thanks of the League are due to the Solway and Manaia Institute for bed socks and caps for the Buchanan Home and to Mrs W. Taylor for donation of books.
