Throughout Germany and Italy there is a howl of rage against Britain and Mr Churchill. Italy is particularly concerned about Mr Churchill’s taunt that the Italian fleet failed to turn up. Italian newspapers express their fury by classing Mr Churchill as “gangster, “hypocrite” and “tyrant.” It is claimed by the Nazis that the Petain Government has broken off relationships with Britain because of the action against the French fleet. No such information has been received in London, where the French Embassy staff is still carrying on. NO OFFICIAL INTIMATION RECEIVED. IN LONDON. REPORTS THROUGH GERMANY & SWITZERLAND. No official intimation has yet been received in London that the Marshal Petain Government has decided to break off diplomatic relations with Britain, though reports to this effect have been received from German and Swiss sources. BERLIN RADIO MESSAGE (Received This Day, 9.20 a.m.) BERLIN, July 5. A radio message states that the French Cabinet, at a meeting under the presidency of M. Lebrun on July 4, decided to break off relations with Britain, after hearing an account of the unjustified attack by the British fleet against units of the French fleet and after paying a high tribute to the heroism of the French fleet. REPUGNANT ACT MARSHAL PETAIN ON ORAN ENGAGEMENT. (Received This Day, 9.40 a.m.) MADRID, July 5. A wireless message says , Marshal Petain has issued a proclamation from Vichy, describing the Oran engagement as a “repugnant act.” FORMAL PROTEST MADE TO FOREIGN OFFICE. (Received This Day, 10.30 a.m.) LONDON, July 5. The French Charge d’Affaires, M. Cambun, protested to the Foreign Office, on behalf of the Petain Government,' against the British Fleet s action against the French Fleet in the Mediterranean. BREAK IN RELATIONS DECISION OF FRENCH COUNCIL OF MINISTERS. (Received This Day. 10.30 a.m.) VICHY, July 5.; It is officially announced that, as a result of the Oran battle, the Council of Ministers has decided to break off diplomatic relations with Britain.

REPORTED BRITISH BLOCKADE WITH FIGHTING POSSIBLY IMMINENT I X SHIPMENT OF AMERICAN PLANES. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 9.40 a.m.) WASHINGTON, July 5. French sources declare that Martinique has been blockaded by British cruisers and that fighting may be imminent. It is said that the Martinique authorities have sided with Marshal Petain. It is stated that the British sought to prevent a shipment of American planes, which had been delivered at the island from California, from falling into German hands. Some French submarines, smaller craft, a force of French marines and some French gold arc in Martinique. It is reported that the American planes have been uncrated and it is suggested that they might be used in the event of- a fight. Martinique is well inside the PanAmerican neutrality zone. FRENCH INDO=CH!NA MAINTENANCE OF STATUS QUO. (Received This Day, 9.40 a.m.) SINGAPORE, July 5. It is officially reported that the status quo of Indo China and the French naval forces there are being maintained by the Brtiish and French authorities. DEFENCE OF SYRIA FRENCH DETERMINATION REAFFIRMED. (Received This Day. 10.30 a.m.) LONDON. July 5. The British United Press Beirut correspondent says it is learned that the French authorities in Syria have reaffirmed their determination to defend Syria against foreign encroachments.
