HOLLYWOOD ROMANCE

UNKIND BUTS. The film colony’s favourite topic of humour at the moment is the romance of the forty-five-year-old George Jessel and sixteen-year-old Lois Andrews. In a popular' theatre show an eight-year-ckl youngster is brought on to the stage and introduced as “Jessel’s fa-ther-in-law.” A columnist reported that "George and Lois have had their first quarrel—she caught him phoning Shirley Temple. Even the juvenile stars are taking part. Judy Garland was being kidded about wearing her mother’s wedding ring, on the wrong hand. Someone asked if she were not afraid that people would think things. "Oh, no." she said. “Every one knows I’m too old for Jessel.” The radio companies have had to ban Jessel jokes.
