“FIFTH COLUMN”
CHARGE AGAINST GERMAN CREW. INTERNED IN UNITED STATES. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) WASHINGTON. July 4. The Department of Justice stated that immigration inspectors have been sent to San Francisco to check reports that members of the crew of the German liner Columbus who were interned on Angel Island have engaged in “fifth column” activities while on shore leave. It is authoritatively stated that an army plane sighted an unidentified foreign submarine last week ofi' the Pacific entrance of the Panama Canal during the fleet's absence from Hawaii. The Naval Committee of the Senate has given approval to the Bill authorising a 70 per cent increase in the fighting fleet.
