GOOD SHOOTING
IN DIFFICULT CONDITIONS SINKING OF ITALIANS DESTROYER. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) LONDON, July 4. The Cairo correspondent of the “Daily Telegraph” says that the first details of the sinking on June 29 ol the Italian destroyer Espero reveal that British warships were taking up positions for convoy duty when an R.A.F. plane reported that it had sighted three destroyers. They incepted the enemy, at the exact point indicated by the plane, and our leading ship opened fire at 18,000 yards in failing light. A terrific explosion on the hindmost ship within 20 minutes indicated that a direct hit had been made, and later a shell hit the same destroyer’s magazine,. in which a fire spread rapidly and finally the ship blew up. The others escaped under a smokescreen in darkness. . A mesage from Alexandria states that British destroyers landed 99 survivors of Italian naval units which have been sunk since June 27.
