OBITUARY
<■ MR W. H. GUTHRIE-SMITH. NOTABLE NEW ZEALAND AUTHOR AND FARMER. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) NAPIER, The death is announced of Mr'’William Herbert Guthrie-Smith, of Tutira. The late Mr Guthrie-Smith, of Tutira, Hawke's Eay, was one of the best known sheep-farmers in New Zealand and an author of several books, mostly dealing with New Zealand birds. He was born at Helmsburgh, Scotland, in 1861, a son of Mr John Guthrie-Smith, of Mugdock Castle, Stirlingshire. After receiving his education at Rugby, he came to New Zealand, arriving here in 1880. Two years later he settled in Hawke’s Bay, where his station, Tutira, became known far and wire as a bird sanctuary. He delighted in outdoor life and was keenly interested in gardening, natural history and photography. His most notable work was “Tutira, the Story of a New Zealand Station,” in which he recorded the profound changes in animal and plant life following on the settlement of the area. Mr Guthrie-Smith was the author of four volumes on New Zealand bird-life, all of which were fully illustrated with his own photographs. He was elected a fellow of the New Zealand Institute in 1924. Mr J. R. D. Guthrie-Smith, of Homebush, Masterton, is a brother. MRS D. E. HUTCHINSON. The many friends of Mr D. E. Hutchinson. of 41 Villa Street, Masterton. will learn with deep regret of the death of his wife. Teresa, which occurred early yesterday afternoon after a long illness. The late Mrs Hutchinson was an old and highly respected resident of Masterton for many years. There are three of a family left to mourn her loss, one son, Mr J. D. Hutchinson (Picton), and two daughters, Mrs J. D. Price (Palmerston North) and Mrs C. M. McLachlan (Masterton). There are nine grandchildren, V also two brothers, Messrs John and James Enright, of Pohangina and Hamilton respectively.
