Messrs L. Tullock (Wanganui), J. Flockton, J. Hurley (Wellington) are at the Hotel Midland today. The appointment of the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, as a member of the Privy Council was officially announced last night. The Rev W. F. Stent, of Carterton. has been appointed Government representative on the New Zealand Poultry Board. Mr A. W. Hendry, of Masterton, is one of the oldest Y.M.C.A. members in New Zealand. In making a donation to the Y.M.C.A. yesterday, Mr Hendry, who is now 83 years of age, produced his membership receipt from the Nelson Y.M.C.A. dated 1877. Before this Mr Hendry had been a member of the Dunedin Y.M.C.A. and has been ever since associated with the Y.M.C.A. There was a large and representative attendance of district settlers at the funeral yesterday of the late Mr J. W. Carswell, of Bideford. The Rev David McNeur conducted the service at the house and the graveside. Many beautiful wreaths were in evidence, including those from the Bideford Sports Club and Messrs J. Graham and Co.. Ltd. Messrs J. R.. J. 0.. W. A.. A. V.. and D. O. Carswell (sons), and Mr R. H. Madden (grandson) acted as pall-bearers. Mr Hugh Adam, who died in Dunedin on Wednesday after a brief illness, in his eighty-third year, was well known in business circles. He was born in Scotland, and came to New Zealand as a young man. securing a position in the Colonial Bank. He was stationed both at Dunedin and at Invercargill, and when the . bank went into liquidation in 1897 he joined the firm of James Speight and Co., as secretary. When the firm became associated with New Zealand Breweries, in 1923. Mr Adam retained his position as secretary, and was also appointed a director' of the local branch. In 1934 he became a director of the main company, a position which he held at the time of his death. The death has occurred of Mr William Rogers, managing director of the Anchor Shipping and Foundry Company, aged 79, 1 states a Press Association message from Nelson. His 65 years’ association with shipping commenced in 1875. when he joined the firm of N. Edwards and Company, whose steamers the Lyttelton. Charles Edward. Kennedy, and Waverley, trading under the name Anchor Line Steam Packets, were well known in New Zealand coastal trade. In 188? he became shipping manager of the Anchor Steam Ship Company, and when the Anchor Shipping and Foundry Company was incorporated in 1901 ho took over the general managership, which position he held till 1936, when he was appointed managing director.
