GOLF NOTES

RIVERSEDE CLUB GAMES PRESIDENT'S TROPHY. PLAY IN FIRST ROUND. The conditions were not of the best when the members of the Riverside Golf Club played the first round of a competition for a trophy donated by the President (Mr J. Hume). The best cards handed in were those of H. Jaspers and R. Hatch 69. F. Shearer. A. Bell. N. Hoar 71, J. Wakelin, I. Coleman and L. Roff 72. A. Jaspers, by his score on Saturday. proved that by concentrating on his shots he can produce good scores. This is the first time for some weeks that he has played to his handicap. A player who has proved that no matter what the conditions are like he can still get good scores is R. Hatch. He played most consistently on Saturday, returning a card of 85. 16. 69. By going out in one over fours N. Hoar indicates that he plays sound golf. Another player who has shown a return to form during the weekend is F. Shearer. He has not been able to devote much time to practice lately but now the championships are coming round again ho should be hard to beat in the intermediate grade. The long-hitting player. F. Roff, played his usual steady round and returned a card of 84. 12. 72. The best hole of his card was a "birdie” 3 on the Donga, 257 yards. All members will be pleased to hoar that L. B. Cross, who had the misfortune to be hit with a ball last weekend. is much improved and from inquiries made this morning he hopes to be on the links again this weekend. During the weekend a special match was played for a trophy donated by the "Handicapper." This game was between L. Roff and J. Wakelin v R. Hatch and R. Wearne. The game proved a great tussle. The long-driving of L. Roff was of no avail against the deadly putting of R. Wearne. Wakelin, who played a great game on Saturday. was not in the hunt on Sunday and the combination of R. Hatch and Wearne was too much for the challengers. Hatch and Wearne won 3 and 1. During the coming week the victors are to play Jock Bell and J. Thornton in the final.
