CARTERTON

FIRE BRIGADE BUSINESS AT ANNUAL MEETING. (“Times-Age" Special.) The annual general meeting ol the Carterton Volunteer Fire Brigade was held in the Fire Station. Broadway, last evening. Deputy-Superintendent C. J. Churchouse presided in the absence of Superintendent Wakelin. who is in camp. There was a good attendance of members. Apologies for absence were received from Fireman R. Smith. Station Officer Jackson and Motorman “*H. M. Catt. The annual report and balance sheet were read and adopted. The balance sheet showed credits in all accounts and altogether the finances of the brigade are very satisfactory. The annual report stated that there were eight calls to fires during the year, a decrease of 9 compared with the previous year. They were: Buildings and dwellings, 4; chimneys, 1; grass and rubbish. 1; motor lorry, 1. All fires excepting grass and rubbish were extinguished by the use of bucket pumps. The estimated loss of property involved amounted to £5775, insurance of property involved £4410, loss ol property £4O. and loss to insurance companies £l2. The brigade was represented at the U.F.B.A. conference by Fireman H. Matson (captain), De-puty-Superintendent C. J. Churchouse, Fireman G. Steffert, Foreman A. R. Clark and Motorman H. M. Catt, who took part in the Centennial demonstrations and finished third in the aggregate championship. The Taucher Cup competition for junior members was won by Station Officer R. Jackson. Fire plugs throughout the borough had been regularly inspected by the borough staff. The plant had been kept in good repair. Owing to war conditions no hose had been obtainable. The 1500 feet in use was the minimum requirement for brigade services and should be carefully conserved, as there was no prospect of further supplies. During the year a representative ladies committee raised the sum of £lO3 10s Id for the purchase of uniforms, waterproof coats and gum boots. One resignation was received during the year, that of Fireman I. H. Knutson, after 17 years of service. Two members, Fireman P. Fitzgerald and Rex Walker had joined the New Zealand f/orces for oversea service. Thanks were ' due to honorary members, the P. and A. Society. Exchange staff. Power Board, ladies’ committee, the Press and the auditor for their kind consideration and support. The election of officers resulted:— Superintendent, Mr R. P. Wakelin; Deputy Superintendent, Mr C. J. Churchouse; Foreman, Mr A. R. Clark: secretary and treasurer, Mr J. Finn; Station Officer, Mr R. Jack,son; auditor. Mr H. M. B. Trapp: motorman. Mr H. M. Catt; hon. surgeon. Dr. R. N. Campbell; executive committee, Messrs R. Taucher. J. Harp and L. M. Clark. One new member was elected to the brigade, Mr E. M. Fairbrother. After the meeting supper was provided and appreciated by all. PARCEL EVENING GATHERING AT PARK VALE. The Parkvale Hall last evening was the scene of a very happy function, when a parcel evening was tendered in honour of the approaching marriage of Miss Bliss, daughter of Mr and Mrs E. T. Bliss, highly respected and popular residents of Parkvale. Dancing was enjoyed to music provided by Mrs V. J. Ashton and Mr G. Harding (Masterton). Extra dance numbers were kindly played by Mrs J. Turley and Miss M. Herrick. Mr C. Jensen, Junr., was an efficient M.C. and kept the dancing going with a swing throughout the evening. Euchre was played by non-dancers, the winners being Mrs H. Renall and Mr C. Swinn. During the dancing a Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mrs W. George and Mr M. Rose and a Lucky Spot Waltz by Miss M. Herrick and Mr V. J. Ashton. At a suitable interval Mr A. Elkins referred to the esteem in which Miss Bliss was held by residents of Parkvale and district and wished her health and prosperity in he’r approaching marriage. He called upon the guest of the evening to accept and open the great array of parcels which she did amid applause from the gathering. Mr C. Seymour, of Hastwell, on behalf of his fiancee, thanked everyone for the pleasant evening and the many useful and thoughtful presents given by Miss Bliss's many friends. Both were accorded musical honours and a pleasant evening terminated after midnight with the singing of "Auld Lang Syne” and the National Anthem. LADIES’ GOLF CARTERTON CLUB GAMES. On Saturday next members of the Carterton Ladies’ Golf Club will play a fourball competition on the Carterton links, Taratahi Racecourse. The draw is as follows: No. 7 tee: Mrs Callender and Miss Sorenson v Mrs Candy and Miss V. Corlet; Mrs Moroney and Mrs Gustofson v Miss Berill and Miss Lawrence. No. 11 tee: Mrs Harrington and Miss 'Shankland v Mrs Murray and Miss Lane; Miss M. Campbell and Mrs Hindley v Miss Smart and Miss Hamer; Mrs Dwane and Miss Beaven v Miss Booth and Miss McFarlane. No. 13 tee: Mrs Forbes and Mrs Ross v Mrs Colson and Miss Peters; Mrs R. N. Campbell and Mrs Robinson v Mrs Pointon and Miss Lamb; Miss P. Renall and Mrs Goodin v Miss Armstrong and Miss I. Corlet; Miss Freer and Miss M. Renall. Misses P. and N. Renall will be tea, hostesses for the afternoon.

POPULAR OFFICER CONSTABLE FAREWELLED. At the Carterton Courthouse last evening a pleasant ceremony was held, the occasion being a farewell to Constable B. Watson, who has been transferred from Carterton to take charge of a new police station at Trentham. Those present were Senior Sergeant G. A. Doggett, Detective-Sergeant W. Kane (Masterton), Constable W. C. Robertson (Carterton), Constable A. McLeod (Featherston), and Constable A. Gregor (Greytown). Senior-Sergeant Doggett congratulated Constable Watson upon his promotion and said his fellow officers of the Wairarapa were sorry to lose his services. He had, during his four years' service with the Carterton district, been a very able and conscientious officer of the law and was well respected by everyone. He knew that Constable Watson would carry out his duties at Trentham in an able way and the service would be the better by his promotion. On behalf 0* *he police force of the Wairarapa he had pleasure in asking their guest to accept a fountain pen and an eversharp pencil and wished him and Mrs Watson the very best of luck in their new sphere. Detective-Sergeant Kane, and Constables Robertson. McLeod and Gregor all paid tribute to the sterling qualities as a police officer of Constable Watson, who would be missed from the Wairarapa. Constable Watson thanked al l , for their kindly remarks and said he would endeavour to faithfully live up to his new duties at Trentham. Constable Watson. Mrs Watson and family leave Carterton tomorrow. Card Evening. A card evening for patriotic purposes was held in the Band Room last evening under the jurisdiction of the Boy Scouts and citizens. There was a large attendance and a most enjoyable time was spent. Prizes were won by Mesdames A. J. Whitehead, Edwards and Nielsen, and the men's prizes went to Mrs O'Halloran and Messrs J. Coleman and J. Parker. At the conclusion, supper was dispensed. Prayer Meeting. The Methodist Church. Carterton, was packed last evening when a combined prayer meeting was held, the Rev. Daglish presiding. A stirring and thoughtful address was delivered by Captain Ojala, of the Salvation Army. Appropriate hymns were sung. Euchre Tourney. There was a large attendance at the euchre tourney held this week in aid of the Red Cross Funds. The prizewinners were as follow: —Ladies': Mrs O’Keefe and Mrs Brown. Men: Mr K. Hodder and Mr Edwards. Before supper a member of the euchre committee, Mrs Ken Hodder, asked Gunner Fitzgerald and Lance-Corporal Anderson (Carterton), who were on leave, to accept a money belt from the ladies' euchre committee, and on behalf of the ladies of the W.D.F.U. a parcel of Woollies containing socks, scarves and balaclavas. Mrs Hodder, on behalf ol all present wished both soldiers the very best of luck. The recipients returned thanks. The evening was brought to a close with the singing of "For They Are .folly Good Fellows." Personal. The health of Mrs Teal Senr., who is 92 years of age, is causing her relatives and friends considerable anxiety.
