LOWER HUTT
GREAT EXTENSION OF AREA PROPOSED PRESENT AND PROSPECTIVE DEVELOPMENTS. LEGISLATIVE AUTHORITY SOUGHT. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The Lower Hutt Borough Council is seeking legislative authority for a great expansion of its area, extending to Taita Gorge on the north, and to a large area of hills on the east and west, altogether increasing the area of the borough three-fold. Special rating areas are to be provided for market gardening and similar lands within the boundaries. The proposals were outlined by the Mayor (Mr Andrews) today. A tremendous growth of the Hutt Valley, both industrial and residential —the latter greatly enhanced by Government housing—has caused the borough services to be extended to areas outside and there is an immediate prospect of more large areas needing to be served, but a -much wider area will come under intensive development within the next ten years and it is considered prudent to include the whole of the area mentioned in a petition which would cover housing, make provision for the control of watersheds and ensure necessary space for a town belt. The chief considerations stated are that the area forms a single drainage area, that it is desirable to ensure that the subdivision of land conforms to a town planning scheme and that an adequate provision should be made of reserves, recreational facilities and other amenities.
