SPRING SHOWS

QUESTION OF CONTINUANCE. PRESIDENTS TO CONSIDER POSITION. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) PALMERSTON N.. July 3. Whether, in view of the war. a spring show should be held was discussed at a meeting of the general committee of the Manawatu Agricultural and Pastoral Association today. It was decided to arrange a conference of presidents of the show associations in this part of the island to secure unanimous action if possible. The finance committee of the Manawatu association is to make a recommendation on the subject before the conference. The president. Mr C. E. Vile, in introducing the subject, said that the association had a duty to perform, for as well as increased production, standards had to be maintained. Mr A. C. Morton suggested that the association's interest commitments should first be studied. Mr E. C. Haydon said the- community 'was faced with severe petrol restrictions. It might be advisable to call a meeting of all associations holding spring shows to put the position.on a uniform basis, said Mr B. E. Keillor. Mr J. E. Hewitt (Mangamaire) said he considered that the extra food required for show stock would be better employed in other directions. Mr Haydon’s motion that a conference of presidents be called was carried. Mr J. Munro said he did not see

how the show could be held, but Messrs J. Knight and J. Linklater supported holding the show, and Mr J. A. Mitchell said stud stock were now half prepared for exhibition. Mr Haydon said all shows in England and Australia had been cancelled in the meantime. Mr A. E. Mansford urged that the holding of the show should be contingent on whether the association’s financial position would be better or worse for holding the fixture. Mr R. O. Dalrymple agreed with this .view. Mr D. B. McEwen moved that the finance committee examine the position, and the motion was carried. Authority was given the president to be guided at the meeting of other presidents by the decision of the finance committee.
