HINTS FOR THE AMATEU
Frait ? Flowers and Vegetables WORK FOR THE WEEK VEGETABLE GARDEN. Earlier sown peas that are through the ground should be moulded up and some support given by small twiggy sticks. In cold districts sow a pinch of cabbage and lettuce in boxes placed in a cold frame. Get ready every inch of ground for thq required vegetable crops. Maturing broccoli are liable to be damaged by frost; break a few leaves over the flower as a protection. Potatoes in store will nowybegin to sprout freely; these should be looked over and the shoots rubbed off. When the soil is in a workable condition, make another sowing of an early pea. FRUIT GARDEN. Whenever the weather is favourable push on with the planting of fruit trees. Make the holes large enough to accommodate ’the roots without cramping. Loganberries can be planted; small plants are much better than large stools for making fresh plantations. Where trees are infested 'with moss and lichen they should be sprayed with the caustic soda spray. - 1 The principal work will now be the pruning of the fruit trees. Decayed areas and hold-over cankers are now more easily seen when the leaf is off; cutting out of these now will save much trouble later. FLOWER GARDEN. The planting of annuals for spring display should be completed as soon as possible if the plants are to make a good show. Roses are among the best of our flowering shrubs for making a continuous display in the garden. Many of the shrubs can be pruned now, but leave the spring-flowering kinds till the bloom is past. Early bulbs are making growth; keep the beds well weeded and apply a topdressing of sulphate of potash mixed, with five times its bulk of dry earth.
