SYRIA & LEBANON
INTIMATION BY BRITAIN NO TOLERATION OF HOSTILE OCCUPATION. READINESS TO TAKE NECESSARY ACTION. The British Government has issued a statement regarding the French mandated territory of Syria and Lebanon, a Daventry broadcast reports. The Government understands that General Mittelhauser, Commancler-in-Chief of the French forces, has stated that hostilities have ceased in Syria. The Government assumes that this docs not mean that if German or Italian forces attempted to occupy the area, no attempt would be made by the French forces to oppose them. In order to set at rest any doubts about the position, the British Government states that it could not allow Syria or Lebanon to be occupied by any hostile power, or used as a base for attack on neighbouring countries. Britain would take whatever action was deemed necessary in such circumstances. Whatever action might be taken would be entirely without prejudice to the future status of the countries under mandate.
