FRENCH IN SYRIA
VISITED BY GENERAL WEYGAND MITTELHAUSER INDUCED. TO SURRENDER. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, June 29. The French residents of Aden and Bargia have informed the Governors that they will fight on to victory with Britain. The "Daily Telegraph" says that General Weygand, presumably’ at the instigation of Germany and Italy, flew to Beirut on June 26 and induced General Mittelhauser not to continue resistance. General Weygand is imposing on all a policy of general surrender whereby he will be able to force a fulfilment of the armistice terms. A Jerusalem message says it is understood the French Administration in Syria and Lebanon will continue. The Syrian forces would have fought on if there had been an alternative Government but the absence thereof and the soldiers' worries about their families in France swayed opinion from the weekend enthusiasm to a realisation of the necessity of collaborating with the Bordeaux Government.
