HARRIER ACTIVITIES

KIATFRE CLUB. FIVE MILE CHAMPIONSHIP. On Saturday, under wintry conditions, the members of the Kiatere Harrier Club held the annual five-mile championship for the Albert Cox Cup, The trail was over a varied crosscountry course with the going fairly heavy. From a fast start A. C. MacDonald took the lead closely followed by R. Searancke and R. Greeks. At the end of the first lap R. Greeks lead from W. Burns by 100 yards, and next came R. Searanche, W. Teaham and S. Nelson. Greeks went on to win easily followed by W. Burns, then 200 yards further back came R. Searancke. The juniors held the 2J-mile championship for the D. Turnbull trophy. Mr D. Turnbull despatched the runners and the field was bunched for the first half-mile. However, N. Jacobsen broke away from the rest and went on to win from F. Sexton, who was followed by S. Pickett. The following are the placings and times:—> Seniors: R. Greeks. 30.53. 1; W. Burns, 32.0, 2; R. Searanche, 33.2, 3; W. Teahan, 34.25, 4. Juniors: N. Jacobsen, 16.24, 1; F. Sexton, 18.55, 2; S. Pickett, 20.30, 3; I. Hodgetts, 21.22, 4. Next week there will be held an invitation run from Mr A. Burns’s residence at Blairlogie. A bus will leave the Post Office at 1.45 p.m. MASTERTON CLUB. BENSON GATE CONTEST. Seven members of the Masterton Harrier Club made the trip to Wanganui over the weekend to take part in the annual Benson Gate trophy contest. Wanganui runners filled the first live positions in the 6.1-mile race. Individual placings were: C. Cox, 33.41, 1; H. Hooper, 38.52, 2; G. Bills. 39.26, 3; F. Kiddle. 39.39, 4; A. Bevege, 30.9. 5. G. Ready (Masterton), 40.30, was sixth. There were 34 competitors, seven being from Masterton. W. Pullar did not compete. It has been decided by both clubs not to compete for the Benson Gate trophy during the war.
