BREAD SUPPLY

INDUSTRY DECLARED CONTROLLED SOME ANTICIPATED BENEFITS. STATEMENT BY MINISTER. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The Acting-Minister of Supply (My Nash) intimated today that the breadmaking industry has been declared a controlled industry under the Supply Control Emergency .Regulations. At a meeting of the executive of the New Zealand Master Bakers' and Pastrycooks' Association, a request was made to the Government to this effect and approval was subsequently given by the Minister of Supply (Mr Sullivan). Mr Nash added that the wheat and flour industries had been operating as controlled, industries for some years, under the administration of the Wheat Committee and it seemed logical to extend the necessary supervision to the. breadmaking industry. One of the first benefits likely to accrue was the zoning of deliveries, with a resultant savi ing in motor spirit. In the meantime, the status quo of all bakers would bo retained, but there was a provision in the regulations for sales or transfers of businesses to be effected. The scheme in general would be administered by the Wheat and Flour Controller, acting in conjunction with a select com-, inittec appointed from employers and employees. There would bo no variation in the existing level of bread prices.
