MEAT PRICES
HALFPENNY A POUND INCREASE AUTHORISED BY TRIBUNAL. TAKING EFFECT ON JULY 1. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON. This Day. The Minister of Marketing (Mr Nash) announced, on behalf of the Minister of Supply, Mr Sullivan', today that approval of an all-round increase of a half-penny a pound in retail prices of meat from July 1 has been given by the Price Tribunal. This increase has been given effect to by a price order which the tribunal has issued. Under this order there may be added to prevailing prices in different localities throughout New Zealand one halfpenny per pound as from July 1. This is a permissive increase and not an obligatory one. Bacon and other goods, commonly known as “small goods,” arc excluded from the scope of the order. Mr Nash drew attention to the fact that the regulation of retail prices by the Price Tribunal served not only to protect the public against excessive rises in prices, but also protected producers for a reasonable extra premium on winter-fattened stock.
