MALTA RAIDED
FIVE TIMES IN ONE DAY BATTERIES IN BRISK ACTION. CASUALTIES IN WORKERS’ DISTRICT. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. LONDON, June 27. In 24 hours up to 6 p.m. last night Malta was raided five times by Italian planes. Hard-pressed by batteries, the bombers jettisoned bombs over a working-class district, the casualties being 23. British bombers yesterday raided an Abyssinian aerodrome with considerable success, and there was heavy damage to hangars and workshops. The bomba’s had a running fight for half an hour with Italian planes, one of which was shot down and another seen to be out of control. Several other raids were made by Blenheims on Abyssinian petrol dumps and an aerodrome. Military targets in Italian Aritrea were bombed. All the British planes returned safely. British headquarters in Cairo report that a small police force under a British officer held off a determined Italian attack supported by tanks in British Somaliland. There were no casualties.
