HEROIC PILOT

GALLANT DEED SAVES COMRADE PLANE LANDED IN FLAMING MASS. AFTER EIGHT TO ONE CONFLICT. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. LONDON, June 26. A squadron leader who recently returned from France tells of the notable heroism of a British bomber pilot. After he had raided enemy columns, he was attacked by eight Messerschmitt fighters, two of which were shot down. The tank of the British machine was set on fire and the pilot ordered the abandonment of the machine. The observer jumped, and the pilot stood on the wing ready to jump when he saw that the rear gunner was wounded and that his parachute harness was entangled in the gun. The pilot returned to the cockpit, regained control of the plane and brought the flaming mass to earth where he rescued the gunner, after which the plane blew up.
