“WHITE NIGHTINGALE”
| GLADYS MONCRIEFF’S NICKNAME. | When, as a little girl, Gladys Mon- ! crieff first appeared at eisteddfod and students’ concerts in Brisbane, she was dressed in simple white frocks. These, with her wonderful voice, earned for her the Welsh endearment, "eoswen,” or "white nightingale.” The legend grew, and in her many successes, including "Sybil,” "The Merry Widow,” "Gipsy Princess,” "Southern Maid.” she always insisted on a white dress for her big scene. In “Karinka,” and "The Chocolate Soldier” the white bridal frocks were specially designed for her. At her recent concert in the Sydney Town Hall, Miss Moncrief! wore a beautiful frock of snowflake romaine. After the performance Miss Moncrieff confessed that white was hetonly superstition.
