The hull of a Maori river or lake canoe in a fair state of preservation and unusual in that it was apparently hollowed from a soft timber (probably white pine) has been presented to the Canterbury Museum by Mr A. F. Birchfield, of the West Coast. The age and history of the canoe are not known, but it was found a year ago by a Maori, who dug it from the bed of a creek running into Lake Haupiri, about 40 miles from Greymouth. There was formerly a Maori settlement near the locality. Advice of the discovery was given to the museum by Mr E. L. Kehoe, of Greymouth. The canoe, a comparatively small one, will be a valuable addition to the museum’s collection.
