INTER=COLLEGE CONTESTS

FOOTBALL AND BASKETBALL. WINS FOR WAIRARAPA. The Wairarapa College Basketball A team and the second football fifteen played their annual matches against Palmerston North Technical High School senior teams at Palmerston North on Tuesday.

The football match resulted in a win for College by 9 points to 3. The Wairarapa forwards dominated the game, and heavy tackling by both forwards and backs bottled up the faster Palmerston back line. Boyne and Matthews were outstanding in the Wairarapa pack, while R. Blatter and Cardno played well as wing and fullback, respectively. Tries were scored for College by Boyne and Slatter, and F. Shearer kicked a penalty goal. Palmerston's try came from a good combined movement, and towards the end of the second spell, Palmerston, pressing strongly, were kept out only by good defence. The Wairarapa College team was: Cardno, R. Slatter. F. Shearer, Cormick, R. Major, Dewar, Q. Schofield (captain), Orsborn, C. Smith, V. Mangham. F. Beaufort. H. Davey. K. Matthews, Orr. Boyne. Emergencies: Beecroft. P. Alexander.

The basketball match was keenly contested and resulted in a win for College by 18 to 12. The College team scored three goals on end before Palmerston commenced to score. When the teams settled down solid basketball was played. Each team scored alternately and at half-time the score was 7—-6 in favour of the College. After the spell each team played with determination and good passing by both sides was seen. The positional play of College gave them a substantial lead of five goals. After this Palmerston scored several goals on end. The last ten minutes College rallied and drew away, the final score being College 18. Palmerston North 12. For College scorers were: Irene Shoosmith, 12 goals; Margaret Jones, 2 goals; Doreen Dagg. 4 goals. For Palmerston: Peggy Wilson, 4 goals; Beth Penny, 5 goals; Joan A.stwood, 3 goals. The Wairarapa team was: Elizabeth McLaren (captain), Doreen Dagg. Joan Russell, Heather Douglas. Peggy Oliver. Phyllis Cody, Dorothy Heckler, Margaret Jones. Emergencies: K. Ross and L. Dickel .
