WOMEN’S PART

INCREASING FARM PRODUCTION I ■ KEEPING OF POULTRY. REMOVAL OF RESTRICTIONS DESIRED. There was a large and representative attendance of women at a meeting held in Masterton yesterday, called by the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, to consider steps to increase production in response to the appeal made by Mr W. J. Polson, M.P., in his address in Masterton last Friday, at the special request of the Government. Mrs K. Groves, president of the Wairarapa Provincial Council of the Women’s Division, presided. Members of the Division and of Women’s Institutes, besides other women interested, were in attendance from various parts of the district. Mr L. T. Daniell spoke on the need for an increased supply 'of eggs and other aspects of the Government’s proposals. In a general discussion on the pro- i posals, the meeting expressed its complete willingness to assist in every possible way to meet the situation. It was felt, regarding the keeping of poultry, that restrictive legislation should be waived meantime, so that 25 fowls or over could be kept without the necessity of registration and the building of accommodation in which material urgently required for more important war work would be required. The transport of eggs was also mentioned as a difficulty, as egg circles were no longer in operation. It was emphasised that the removal of these restrictions would enable a big effort to be made by farmers’ wives in all parts of the country, without coSt, to keep an increased number of fowls and it was felt that the additional quantity of eggs available under these conditions would be considerable.

The opinion was expressed that it would be a better policy to allow skilled farm workers to remain on the farms rather than replace them with unskilled labour.

Mesdames K. Groves, J. Andrew, C. Stewart, C. C. Jackson and T. R. Barrer were appointed a committee to attend a meeting of the general committee for Primary Production to be held in Masterton on Monday.
