PITCAIRN ISLAND

ISSUE OF SET OF STAMPS. Pitcairn Island neither belongs to nor is it administered by New Zealand, although apparently the majority of the Dominion’s stamp collectors seem to think so. Ever since it was announced some weeks ago that Pitcairn Island was to have a pictorial set of stamps, philatelists have been eager to order sets and arrange for first-day covers to be sent to them, and the Dominion's postal officials have been inundated with these requests (states the "Evening Post"). The issue of these stamps, however, has nothing whatever to do, with New Zealand. Those who want to obtain sets of the stamps when they are issued should send the equivalent cash to the Postmaster-General at Suva, Fiji. Pitcairn Island, as a Crown Colony, comes under the jurisdiction of the High Commissioner for the Western Pacific, and is one of the many islands looked after by that authority who has his headquarters in Fiji. On the other hand, if first-day covers are wanted, applications should be forwarded to the Chief Magistrate. Pitcairn Island. The stamps will be sold on a sterling basis, and all remittances, whether for unit stamps or covers, should be made payable at Suva. The designs on the forthcoming stamps, the date of the appearance of which is not definitely known, include views of the island and scenes connected with the Mutiny of the Bounty.
