TURNED IN FRENCH HISTORY OBSERVANCE OF ARMISTICE DAY. MEMORIAL SERVICES FOR WAR DEAD. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. BORDEAUX, June 25. Today is Armistice Day. It is a national day of mourning with dignity in homage to our soldiers who fought so heroically,” said M Pcmaret, broadcasting to the nation. “Today France must be silent and must allow her heart to weep in order to strengthen herself with hope.’ “Marshal Petain is to broadcast (probably at about 12.30 p.m.). There will be no music all day except the Mar seillaise. Marshal Petain and other members of the Government are to attend a solemn service at the Bordeaux Cathedral.
“Tomorrow a : ew life wi!< begin for France. Every man, sc Icier or civilian will resume work. The essential care of the Government is to assure work for everyone —therefore bread. We arc turning a dark page of our history and are looking towards a new destiny. Our sad, wounded Fatherland is going to put its affairs in order.”
M Pomaret instructed that all cafes, cinemas and theatres close today, also all shops except those needed to keep order. All flags on public buildings must be half-masted. A memorial service for the dead is being held at 11 a.m., and one minute’s silence will be observed at the memorials to the glorious dead of 1914-18 and those none the less glorious of 193940. M Pomaret said Marshal Petain has made a gift of himself to France. Around him a constitutional Government resolute and worthy will devote itself to the welfare of the country, which will continue to live with its soul uplifted and free.
