RETURNED SOLDIERS
SUCCESSFUL BALL LAST NIGHT. The annual ball of the Carterton Branch of the Returned Soldiers' Association held last evening in the King's Theatre was a brilliant success. The dancing rioor was crowded with dancers from all parts of the district. The interior of the hall was decorated in a .dimple yet very effective fashion. Bunding of the Allied Nations was used and Interspersed with the flags was a ring of electric light bulbs right round the room in varying colours which produced a pretty effect. From the wall on either side of the room streamers of bulbs were carried to the ceiling in the centre and formed in a cluster. Many complimentary remarks were made concerning the decorations. Part of the back of the hall was partitioned off as a lounge for those who preferred to sit out dances.
Prior to the commencement cf the ball the Wairarapa Pipe Band marched from the town playing Scotch airs and also rendered a programme outside the hall. Proceedings commenced with the singing of the National Anthem. The supper arrangements were in charge of an energetic ladies’ committee assisted by members of the Returned Soldiers' Association. The many supper sittings were well catered for. The music was played by Tom Udy's Dance Band. Extras were played byMrs V. J. Ashton, Misses M. Herrick and J. Lorenzen, T. Udy and Pipe Band (2), and the orchestra. Messrs F..Taplin, R. P. Wakelin, V. C. Mauley and H. J. Rathbone were M’s.C.
