STATE DEPARTMENTS

URGED TO SAVE PETROL LEAD THAT MUST BE GIVEN TO PUBLIC. APPEAL BY MR SEMPLE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH. This Day. As far as petrol conservation is concerned, the attitude of Government departments as presented to the public must be “Do as we do,” not “Do as we say.” This point was made very clear by the Minister of National Service (Mr Semple) in the course of a . statement in which he said various departments would be expected to give the people an inspiring lead in saving petrol. “My appeal for conservation of petrol is made not only to the general public and to private carriers, but to Government Departments themselves,” said Mr Semple. “Any official in a Government Department ought to show an example and take a lead. We cannot expect a response from the general public unless we get it from our own State Departments. The appeal, in fact, applies to every section of the community, with special emphasis on Government Departments, and that of course includes even the Army, where big lorries should not be used where little runabouts would suffice.”
