JAPANESE DEMAND
ADDRESSED TO BRITAIN CESSATION OF ASSISTANCE TO CHINA. PRINCE KONOYE TO LEAD NEW PARTY. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. TOKIO. June 24. Prince Konoye has resigned the presidency of the Privy Council and is expected to lead the new National Party. The Council’s vicepresident (Mr Koshimichi Hara) will probably succeed Prince Konoye. The opinion is expressed that the National Party will absorb the existing political into a single group closely to co-operate with the Army. Thus the latter's influence in foreign affairs is likely to be increased. Mr Hara was installed as President of the Privy Council at a palace ceremony. Mr Tani summoned Sir Robert Craigie (British Ambassador) and demanded the stoppage of transport to Chungking and assistance by supplies via Burma and Hongkong. A Chungking message says the Foreign Minister. Mr Wang Chung Wui, said: "In the event of a Japanese-aimed invasion of Indo-China the Chinese Government will preserve China s existence and independence and will be constrained to take»such measures in. self defence as are necessary to cope with the situation.”
