Navy League Effort.

In connection with the cake raffled by the Ladies’ Auxiliary of the Masterton branch of the Navy League, the president and members wish to thank Mrs H. Reid for the donation of a cake, and the management of the W.F.C.A.. Ltd., and Mr R. Page for permitting the cake to be displayed in their windows. The cake was won by Mr A. G. Wyeth, of Gladstone. Faith in the Empire.

The Minister for National Service (Mr R. Semple) was frequently applauded by a big gathering of road transport operators in Christchurch last evening when he made a stirring declaration of his faith in the ability of the Empire to withstand the struggle against Germany and her Allies. He 'insisted that he did not wish to scare anyone, but he said all should realise that New Zealand might have to play a sterner part in the struggle. “We may be called on to defend this country at any time. No one knows,” the Minister declared. "We are a country blessed w’th marvellous resources and wonderful potentialities, with a small population and much to appeal to those who arc not so fortunate. This hungry, restless and selfish world is not going to leave us alone. That is my considered opinion. We will be in the stir-up before it is all through.”
