LOSS OF NIAGARA
PRELIMINARY INQUIRY HELD
PROCEEDINGS NOT OPEN TO PRESS. CARE OF PASSENGERS & CREW IN AUCKLAND. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, This Day. A preliminary inquiry into the loss of the Niagara was held today by the superintendent of the Mercantile Marine in Auckland, Captain H. A. Dillner. Evidence was given by the master. Captain Martin, also by various officers and members of the crew. Captain Dinner’s report will be forwarded to the secretary of the Marine Department, Wellington. The proceedings were not open to the Press. No statement was issued at the conclusion of the inquiry. It is not anticipated that there will be a magisterial inquiry in the case of the Niagara.
The immediate needs of the passengers and crew are being attended to in Auckland. The crew today expressed deep appreciation of the wonderful way they had been looked after. A thanksgiving service lor the safety of the officers and crew, held last evening in the Mariners’ Chapel of St Peter, was largely attended.
