Mr G. A. Lewin, Dunedin, has been appointed a director of the State Advances Corporation. The mayor of Balclutha, Mr J. H. Stevenson, has joined the Royal New Zealand Air Force, being posted to Levin. Messrs A. R. Parrant (Palmerston North), Skoglund, Hadley, S. Lunn. Fitzgerald (Wellington), are at the Hotel Midland, Masterton, today. Mr J. Paul, M.Com., now of the Westport Technical School, has been appointed commercial teacher at the Hutt Valley Memorial Technical College. Mr M. R. Jones, Hawera, a Maori interpreter and business man, has accepted the position of private secretary to the Minister of Native Affairs, vacant by the death of Mr H. R. Balneavis.
Mr Michael O'Sullivan. Tahunanui. Nelson, died recently at the age of 62. Mr O’Sullivan was on the eve of his retirement on superannuation from the position of depot superintendent of the Vacuum Oil Company's Nelson branch. He was for many years attached to the Wellington depot of the company.
The death occurred suddenly in Tauranga yesterday of Mr Arthur Skinner, aged 66, formerly constable in charge in Tauranga. and known throughout New Zealand, states a Press Association message from Tauranga. Born at Strathdon, Aberdeenshire, he came to New Zealand when 14 years old and resided first in Otago. He gained prominence in the Caledonian games in 1902, and created a double world record in Auckland, throwing the hammer and weight. These records still hold under the same conditions, and at the time created comment throughout the world. His wrestling record was also noteworthy. He triumphed in more than 500 athletic contests and held more than 100 medals. He joined the police force in 1899 in Wellington, and later moved to Auckland. He was promoted to the detective branch in 1907. but at his own request reverted to uniform, taking charge at Tauranga till his retirement.
