“THEY LOVE LIBERTY”

HOW TO HANDLE NORWEGIANS. One of the most interesting sidelights on the German thrust into Scandinavia. notes the “Christian Science Monitor.” is the official German conclusion about how to handle Norwegians. Reporting from Oslo. Mr Edmund Stevens quotes as follows from the circular of instructions issued to each German soldier: —"Be patient, for the Norwegians are slow thinkers. They love liberty and therefore hate being ordered about. One must talk to them gently and try to persuade them.” Even amid their tragedy the people of Norway must smile at this picture of themselves. The compliment is lefthanded. but sincere. And we may be grateful that our Norwegian friends are to be spoken to gently, even though we read in another despatch that in Oslo already the effort to “persuade them" has resulted in the shooting of a hundred civilians, mjiny of them chauffeurs who apparently refused to be “ordered about" by Gorman invaders.
