NARVIK MADE USELESS

REASONS FOR THE ALLIED WITHDRAWAL MORE VITAL STRATEGIC POINTS ELSEWHERE. DEPARTURE NOT A GERMAN VICTORY. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY. June 10. It is appreciated in London that there was nothing in the situation in Norway itself which necessitated the Allied withdrawal and that this was due solely to the military situation at more vital strategic points and is in no sense a victory for the German armies in northern Norway. On the contrary, the capture of Narvik, besides being a useful operation in itself, was a definite military defeat for Germany, which had rendered the town useless to Germany for a year or more. It is realised that to maintain, equip and provision the comparatively small body of men in northern Norway would have involved a dissipation of effort, specially in ships, material and aeroplanes, not justified either by the importance of Narvik once the port was destroyed or by the gains derivable from further successes in that area. KING HAAKON WELCOMED IN BRITAIN. LONDON, June 11. His Majesty welcomed King Haakon and Prince Olaf at Euston station. Crowds cheered as the kings drove off to Buckingham Palace.
